Growing Up Live

it’s two days before the big cd release party at the knitting factory.  i am helping Natasha put the final touches on all the planning.  in the background I have a dvd of peter gabriel’s growing up live concert.  tremendously inspiring to watch someone i’ve admired giving a fab concert, full of spirit and energy.  i would feel so blessed if i could offer a show with as much heart and joy, not to mention in a stadium full of fans.

it seems more and more that i’m wishing i could get to london and europe.  i miss it very much since my last trip in october.  i’m sure watching the gabriel dvd has only reminded me of my trip there.

i will hopefully see many of you at the knitting factory on sunday.  let this be the start of something magical.

Artivist and the Egyptian Theater

last night, i had the best time promoting rock candy at the artivist film festival closing gala (egyptian theater, hollywood, ca).  it was the first gig that the guys and i have done since the recording.

with the cd release party coming up in a few days, ethan, thomas, dan and i got a chance to practice the show live in front of about 200 folks.  had so much fun playing, and i even got a chance to put down my guitar and just sing to the crowd on "table for two."

i haven’t been able to do that in 5 years.  thomas’ electric guitar sound really gives me the freedom to stop hiding behind my guitar and come out and play with the crowd instead!

am so excited for the release party on may 1st at the knitting factory!  d’lo is the mc for the night.  soniya’s going to be there to lend her beautiful voice on back ups.  dj rockfresh will spin us something good that night.  ay!  can’t wait!

A Detour to Paradise

welcome to shaheensheik.com!  this is my blog page.  here i get to ramble a bit about what’s happening with the release of rock candy and my musings about the world.  so here goes…

is it possible to detour into paradise?  well, somehow I managed to!  i am in paia, maui.  the trip was a gift from a dear friend of mine who felt after spending three months in the studio creating rock candy, i deserved a little break.

the album was mastered by stephen on monday.  we were done by 5 pm.  tuesday, rebecca and i put together a bunch of packets with early copies of the cd to friends and family.

as the resident wiccan witch at azadi, rebecca created a little prayer space for us so that we could send out the cds with lots of love and good wishes to everyone who was to receive them.  after the prayers, we promptly broke open a bottle of champagne and toasted a bit more than we should have.  by thursday morning, i was on the 8am aloha airlines flight to maui.

it is so lovely here.  have managed to sleep a lot and hang with the locals at the wind surfing contest.  you cannot believe what an extreme sport this is.  it’s so fantastic!  and really beatiful to watch.  there must have been 50 windsurfers skating over the water at about 40 miles per hour all out at once and we were perched on top of the bluff looking down at them all.  poetic.

when we got back to the house today, we were starving. i haven’t made anything in the kitchen since before i left for india in december (aside from  the toasted bagles with cream cheese i’ve sustained myself on during production).  today, i broke the dry spell and made some guacamole from scratch - spicy like i like it.  next stop, my friend’s backyard, aka the beach!  gotta run.  more soon.  pictures too.
